How to Care for Your Oriental Rug

If you are wondering how to care for your oriental rug, you are at the right place.

An Oriental rug, like every kind of decorative item, needs caring as they are a precious investment.

An Oriental rug will provide a level of sophistication to your home and make it look seamless and perfect.

These intricate art pieces have strict maintenance requirements to fit their high aesthetic bar.

Whether a treasured family heirloom or a new investment, an oriental rug can last for many years if it’s properly cared for. With these tips, you can learn how to take care of your oriental rug so that its rich colors and exciting patterns last for years.

The following are 10 suggestions for keeping your oriental rug in good condition.

1. Keep out of direct sunlight

When caring for an oriental rug, it’s important to remember that exposure to direct sunlight can significantly fade the rug’s dyes over time.

You should keep the rug out of direct sunlight as much as possible to extend its life span.

Note:
If this isn’t possible, you should rotate your rug periodically to help it fade more evenly.

2. Turn it around to balance out the fading and wear

Turning your rug twice a year can help protect it from wear and tear uniform and keep the color from fading in one spot due to prolonged exposure to the sun.

Rotating your rug every few months is recommended, especially if it is placed in a high-traffic area.

3. Air it out to stop moisture from building up

Wool rugs can shrink if they are exposed to humidity for an extended period, and mold and mildew can quickly spread through them.

Whenever you notice the dampness take your oriental rug outside to dry. It often takes a few hours to minimize moisture and eliminate residual scents in the open air.

4. Regular vacuuming extends the life of oriental rugs

Your oriental rug’s fibers can become compacted by foot traffic if you don’t regularly and thoroughly vacuum it. Both visible dirt and ground-in particles can harm the rug fibers.

To begin, invert the rug and run the vacuum over the rug’s backing several times. Any embedded dirt can be worked loose by agitating the surface with the beater bar (now down but set high).

When vacuuming an oriental rug’s front, ensure the beater bar is up or on high since low-set beater bars damage piles. Slowly vacuum in the direction of the fibers twice to avoid sucking up fringes, and vacuum the edges with the upholstery attachment.

5. To remove mat fringes, turn the rug over

The ends of oriental rugs are notorious for getting tangled up. So, avoid using a comb on the fringe to untangle it, as doing so can weaken the fringe’s natural fibers. Instead, you can flip the rug over so that the fringe can straighten out on its own.

To further assist the process of straightening out the fringe, you can also gently shake the rug.

6. Immediate spill cleanup reduces damage

If you clean up spills on your rug as soon as possible, you can avoid permanent stains, but if you wait, the damage may be difficult to fix.

White paper towels or cloths are the best options to blot up liquid stains as soon as they are seen.

Do not use colored towels, as the dye may contaminate the wet rug fibers. Use a round-tipped spoon rather than a knife if you need to scoop up extra liquids or food.

Warning!
Never rub the spillage in, as this can work the stain deeper into the rug and damage the fibers; instead, blot up the liquid.

7. Use Under-Rug Padding

Your oriental rug’s shape, durability, and cleanliness will all benefit from padding placed beneath it. In addition, it prevents the rug from slipping across the hardwood floor.

8. Adjust furniture placement

In most cases, you shouldn’t put a heavy piece of furniture on top of a rug. If you move your furniture about every few months, you can keep the rug from getting worn down or imprinted in one spot.

If you want to further save the rug’s fibers, put casters under the furniture’s pointy feet.

9.      Do careful rug rollout

When storing an oriental rug, it is best to roll it tightly from the side opposing the direction of the pile. Wrap it in airtight polythene and keep it in a dry area after securing it with strong twine or rope and add some mothballs to keep it safe.

10.  Professional washing

Avoid harsh cleaning products if you want to keep your rug pristine. A better natural alternative is to use warm water and vinegar (or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda for stubborn stains). Once blotting has absorbed excess water, you can speed drying by airing your rug outside or using a fan.

Conclusion

Oriental rugs are expensive; thus, proper care is essential as they increase home décor and are a big investment.

We want our purchases to be beautiful and durable then; if you want your rugs to last, you must maintain them to preserve rug colors and patterns.

Remember that there are various rug types on the market, each of which has unique cleaning requirements.

How to keep Rugs from Sliding

When it comes to purchasing rugs, you might consider essential factors that vary from the rug’s origin to its colors and shape. But have you ever thought of how to keep rugs from sliding?

If you come up with this common way to use silicone caulking or hot glue on the bottom of rugs, you are deeply in a mistake.

Rugs with poor stability are not only unattractive but also potentially dangerous.

You need something better than a hot glue tutorial if you want to know how to prevent rugs from sliding around on the floor that cut through the noise.

Here are seven precious options available to follow to save you the trouble of replacing the floor coverings.

Rubber Waffle Rug Pads

The first way to keep rugs from sliding is using a high-quality non-slip rug pad.

Rug pads are available in a wide range of thicknesses and levels of durability, and they can be cut to suit rugs of varying shapes and sizes.

They act as a sound buffer and shock absorber to keep the rug in a particular place.

Check out the rug pads we offer below to find the one that will work best with your rug and flooring.

  1. Select a thin rubber rug pad (1/16″) for low-traffic areas ideal for a dining room where chairs will be dragged across the floor; these are a practical and stylish addition to any table.
  2. The All-In-One reversible rubber rug pad is the best choice if you have a rug, an uneven floor, tile, or any other hard surface.

Tip: The 1/8″ thickness makes it ideal for high-traffic areas and prevents rugs from bunching and sliding.

  • A felt rug pad provides superior padding and security and is only for maximum safety. It works well on tile, stone, marble, wood, laminate, vinyl, and other uneven surfaces.
  • It can be used over radiant heat floors and is reversible for rugs. It is common practice to apply a layer of natural rubber on the underside of felt rug pads in order to prevent them from slipping.
  • The rubber outdoor rug pad is what you need for your rugs in the great outdoors. With this pad, your rug won’t slide around, and it won’t be a breeding ground for mildew and mold.

Where to buy Rubber Waffle Rug Pads

Tip: You may find rubber waffle rug pads in online shops, home goods, and home improvement sections of major retailers.

2. Rug Pins

Rug pins are helpful for securing the fringe of a rug when placed on top of a carpeted floor or hallway. The area rug is held in place by the carpet beneath it, and the pins are slanted so as not to go through both layers. The pin’s top is flat and transparent, making it less noticeable after it is in place.

3. Quick-Attachment Hooks and Loop-Type Fasteners

Similar to how Velcro fastens on children’s footwear, hook and loop anchors can do the same. An adhesive coating on the anchor’s underside can be used to secure it to the floor or the back of a rug. Next, the two sides of the rug are joined together to produce a connection that will keep it from moving.

4. Gripper Tape

Most gripper tape is 2 to 3 inches wide and comes on a roll. The tape is laid out directly on the floor in a grid or outline to accommodate the rug’s borders. It’s most effective on no bigger than 13 feet x 19.5 feet rugs. The rug and the gripper tape may be readily lifted off the floor and adjusted, making maintenance and cleaning a breeze.

5. Rug Tape

If your rug is constantly sliding around the room, Rug tape may be the answer. After being applied, the tape firmly secures the rug to the carpet.

Hardwood floors and rugs with an existing rubber backing are unsuitable.

Warning: Avoid using tape or anything else adhesive on hand-knotted or antique rugs because it might damage the rug by tearing at the fibers.

6.      Double-Sided Rug Tape

You can get double-sided rug tape in either a roll or pre-cut squares. Different carpet tapes have different adhesive strengths and thicknesses. The most long-lasting tape is two-sided and features an acrylic adhesive, ideal for synthetic rugs like polypropylene.

Note: It’s important to read the carpet tape’s instructions before applying it to the floor to ensure you’re using the right kind of tape for the subfloor.

7.      Rubber Stoppers

Thin, flat-weave rugs are a good match for the solid grid surfaces commonly used in producing natural rubber rug pads. They are more expensive than waffle rug pads, but good quality rubber has no chemicals that could damage your floors. Rubber pads prevent rugs from sliding on the floor but don’t offer much comfort.

Conclusion

In the end, these practical ways can keep rugs from sliding and relieve the concerns of rug damage since most people use hot glue or silicone caulking. It will be best to be careful about sticking things to the underside of your rug. When the hardened caulk or glue is walked on, it might leave a sticky residue on the floor.

Helpful tips for cleaning a rug

  • You can put your rug into your washing machine if it is tiny and only if the manufacturer has said so. look at the back of our rug and search for the manufacturer’s label. It should tell you how to wash the rug. If there is no label, please check the catalog that comes with your rug, or call the manufacturer for safe guidance.
  • If your rug is too big for the machine, you can deep-clean it by hand. (It is better to do it on a sunny day to wash and dry quickly)
  • If you have hair loss or have a pet, you need to brush to get any lingering stray hairs.

  • If you do not have rug shampoo, you can make a homemade one.
  • It would keep your rug looking fresh if you sprinkled baking soda on it before you vacuumed it.

How to Clean Different Types of Rugs

Rugs should be vacuumed regularly and spot-cleaned when there is a stain.

However, each type of rug has a particular set of cleaning instructions recommended to follow on their website or guidebook.

Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs are the most common type of rugs that you can easily clean.

1.     Prepare the cleaning materials

Let’s look at the proper materials needed to wash the rug:

You will need water, special shampoo, a bucket, and a soft-bristle brush to deliver a complete hand wash rug cleaning.

You can also add extra cleaning tools, including rubber gloves, a garden hose, and a wet-dry vacuum, to experience a tremendous outdoor cleaning.

2.     Remove the dirt and dust

To remove the dirt, you should vacuum in the direction of the pile, flip it over, and keep cleaning the back side.

3.      Deep cleaning the rug with shampoo

Place the rug on an appropriate tarp or deck, and then check the garden hose to stretch near the water supply easily.

After that, follow the rug label’s instructions and wash it with rug shampoo.

Note:
To make rug shampoo mix the appropriate ratio of mild water and vinegar, one part vinegar and two parts water, fabric softener, and detergent in a bucket.

4.     Do a rug color test

  • First, find a small area of the rug located out of sight.
  • Second, dip a clean, white towel in hot water.
  • Third, press the towel into the rug for one minute to see if any color has blended.
  • Forth, Flip the rug over to the backside and redo it.

5.     Hand clean the rug

Now, it is time to dip the sponge or soft bristle brush into the shampoo and work up a foamy lather over the rug’s surface. Leave it for at least five minutes to allow the surfactant and dirt away from the rug. Then you can start rinsing.

6.      Let the Rug Dry

The last step is letting the rug dry. Using a towel to absorb the excess water and let the air dry is a great idea. For easy drying, there are two ways 1) Using fans helps to speed up the drying process, and 2) keeping flip over the rug allows the bottom side dry.

7.      Vacuum the rug again

Place the rug properly in the correct position and then vacuum from top to bottom again. Now you can maintain your freshly cleaned rug. It is enjoyable to clean an area rug yourself, and you can complete the job whenever you like.

Wool Area Rugs

The wool area rug cleaning formula differs from the oriental rugs. Although professional wool rug cleaning increases lifespan, it can be costly, and knowing the cleaning method will assist you in getting a professional clean at home.

1.     Gather the essential cleaning tools

Before you begin, you will need a sponge and laundry detergent for wool, buckets, broom, and towels. You will also need mild detergent or rug shampoo.

2.     Vacuum the wool rug

First, you should vacuum the back and front of the wool rug to clean the dust and dirt.

3.     Bring the area rug outside

Bring the rug outside and drop it up on a railing or fence. With a broom, whack the back of it to get more dirt out. Continue until the dirt clouds disappear.

Do a deep cleaning

Before washing the wool rug, skid your hand in the rug to find the soft direction. So, start cleaning in the soft order and use a wet sponge instead of soaking the rug fibers.

Note:
If you are using a branded rug shampoo or a type of rug with the washing instructions, read the instructions carefully before starting to wash.

4.     Rinse it

Dampen the sponge in the second bucket of cold water and gently rub it lightly on the area rug to rinse it.

Be careful no to soak the rug!

5.     Dry it

As excessive heat might cause shrinkage, wet rugs should always be air dried.

Final Thought

Having the regular rugs cleaning is really necessary. It will increase hygiene and help create a healthy indoor environment. Also, termites and other allergies are held in their fibers. Deep cleaning prevents the formation of fungi, bacteria, and mold. Meanwhile, regular vacuuming can help break loose the dirt, pet hair, and other debris.

Rug Weaving: The First Part – Framing or Siah Bandi

What is rug framing or Siah bandi? Why is it Necessary? What is the water count, and how to calculate the rug wate? We want to teach these subjects in the second part of the rug weaving tutorial (pictorial rug framing). At the end of this article, you can frame any loom in different sizes.

What is Siah Bandi or Framing?

A rug must be prepared to be wrapped. For this propose, the loom must be divided into 7 cm units based on wate design.

Why the Loom Must be Framed?

You can start weaving a rug from one side of the loom and finish it on the other without Siah Bandi. However, Siah Bandi, or the framing, is still an essential step in rug weaving and cannot be removed. You might ask yourself why? This is a common question for many unfamiliar with framing and its advantages. They are unaware of the consequences of wrapping a rug without Siah Bandi or framing.

What is Wate Count in Hand-Knotted Rugs?

Before talking about loom Siah Bandi, you should know what “wate count” is. Wate count is a term used for hand-knotted rugs, which is considered an essential criterion in evaluating the quality and value of a rug. Wate count determines whether a rug is fine-knotted or coarse-knotted.

How to Calculate Wate Count?

Wate counting can be different in different regions. Here we will use the Turkish wate counting unit. Every Turkish wate count is equal to 7 cm. It means that the number of knots placed in 7 cm determines the rug wate count. The higher the knots in every unit, the knots will be finer. With more knots in every unit, the rug will have higher quality. Also, the wate count can differ based on the material used to weave a rug. More knots will be placed in every unit when we use high-quality materials.

rug-weaving

Wate count can equal 40, 45, 50, 60, 70, and 80. The wate count in most hand-knotted rugs and pictorial rugs hand-woven is usually 45. And we also consider 24 wate count for Siah Bandi of the loom.

Selecting a Suitable Loom

First, you need to get a suitable rug loom that matches the size of the chosen design.

How Do We Know Which Is the Most Suitable Rug Loom?

Before choosing a rug loom, you should choose a design and pattern to weave. Usually, if you choose a computerized design and pattern, the size of the rug is included on the first and all design pages. But if you select a traditional design, you can calculate the size of the rug by counting the 10×10 units of the checkered pattern.

What Are the Features of a Suitable Rug Loom?

Every frame is not a loom and is not suitable for wrapping a rug on. Unfortunately, most customers try to make a loom by welding 4 rods together. If you do not consider the loom’s unique standards, you will face many problems during weaving:

  • The rug loom must be robust and durable.
  • The size of the top and bottom of the loom should be the same.
  • The rug should not be crooked, and the corners’ angles should be the same.

How to Frame a Loom?

Now you know Siah Bandi, it’s time to get down to business and start framing. At first, you need a series of tools:

  • Thread and computer map
  • Suitable loom for selected design
  • Wastepaper
  • Marker
  • Glass glue
  • Fabric meter
  • Calculator

First, Cover the loom’s upper and lower parts with some waste paper. We do this for two reasons:

  • To make a clean work and for making out signs with marker
  • The thread can be moved easily on the paper during the wrapping stage.

Framing a Loom in 4 Steps

The first step

After preparing the tools and installing the paper, it is time for the first stage of Siah Bandi. First, we measure the upper bar of the loom, find the middle, and marked it. Then we do the same thing on the lower bar. But this time, we calculate the inner part of the bottom bar, then find the middle of it and mark it. We do this because our wrapping is placed precisely in the middle of the rug loom.

The Second Step

At this stage, you need to calculate your design’s wate count and width. If you use a computerized pattern, the wate count and the rug width are included on the first page. At this stage, using a calculator, divide the width of the rug (our is150 knots) by the wate count ( which is 45 on our pattern).
Important point: We add 10 knots to the width of the rug pattern. For example, if the pattern width is 150 knots, we add ten more knots to have 160 knots.

rug-weaving

Why Should We Add 10 Knots to The Rug Design Width?

The first reason is that if we want to work on selvedge, you can keep the first and last 5 knots for selvedge and you should not weave the knots on them.

The second reason is that if we don’t want to add selvedge on the rug, we add these 10 knots To make a thin or coarse weft.

The Third Step

So, by adding ten nodes to the design’s width of the design we have 160 notes. We should divide 160 by 45, which is our wate count.

160 / 45 = 3.555555555555556

Our approximate number is 3.5, which means we have three units with a width of 7 cm and one unit with a width of 3.5 cm (which is half of 7 7 CM). The width of our work is approximately 24 cm. Again, we divide 24 by 2, 12 cm from the middle of the upper and lower bar of the loom.

The Forth Step

In this step, we start with the meter tape and mark the top and bottom of the loom with 7 cm units. If we multiply three units by 45 knots, it will be 135, while the width of our design is 160. So, 25 knots will remain (160=135+25). We should add 3 units of 7 cm to the end of the work after wrapping. Here is the end of the work and Siah Bandi is done.

In the next post we will learn how to wrap a rug.

Introduction to colors in a Persian rug

What do the colors in a Persian rug mean?

Throughout history, the luxurious and sophisticated Persian rug is an item that has been in high demand.

Colors could significantly impact ancient cultures and inherit them with the present cultures of the world.

The materials, colors, and patterns used to create the rugs are all a part of a story that is exceptionally one of a kind.

  • Green equals growth

Green is one of the most popular colors in Persian rugs. It symbolizes growth, health, balance, and prosperity. It’s a field or forest’s vivid use and represents new beginnings and rebirth.

  • Red equals passionate

Red symbolizes desire. It might be pleasant, comforting, or energizing, making it more eye-catching and intriguing. Rug producers use red to highlight designs and intricacy.

  • The Tranquility of blue

Blue is ranked as the third most frequent Persian rug color, which gives a calming and peaceful sense.

Weavers extracted blue from woad and indigo, which is also associated with power and the afterlife. Weavers utilized the shade to express optimism for the afterlife.

  • Yellow and gold equal happiness

Yellow and gold symbolize pleasure and positive energy. Yellow Persian rugs capture the sun’s warmth and life’s joy as well saffron, chamomile, and vines show the color and reflect the royalty or prominent families.

  • Beige and white equal innocence

In ancient Persian culture, cleanliness is vital, and artisans utilize white and beige colors in a creative mix to create delicate motifs that symbolize innocence. As a bonus, it lends an earthy warmth to the rugs, which makes the room feel more open and airy.

  • Black equals  mystery

Even though black is the most powerful color, its connotations in dark blue are rather potent as well. Persian rugs have a gloomy, depressing vibe to the eye; an abundance of black can appear ominous.

Persian weavers rarely employed black to construct exclusive designs or backgrounds, unlike Caucasian or Bessarabian weavers. It outlines the design most frequently. Tannin, oak tree galls, and iron were all used to make natural black dyes.

  • Orange equals devotion and piety

Orange is a significant color in the symbolism of Buddhism and Hinduism in Asia, even though in Europe and the United States of America, it is most commonly linked with fun, the unorthodox, extroverts, fire, activity, and danger.

This color is associated with piety, humility, and devotion in Persian rugs because of its spiritual and meditative quality.

  • Brown equals fertility

The color brown is associated with fertility and the earth itself. Brown is a significant color because it brings to mind the earth, where we all live and work. It has a natural feel and is an attractive hue to utilize inside.

Conclusion

Colors are essential in conveying the real sense to spaces and people. Rustic rooms benefit from adding rugs in earth tones like brown, blue, and green. Luxurious piles in warm colors can also be seen on area rugs, emphasizing a cozier, more homey atmosphere.

Significant uses of rugs to keep your home decoration fresh

A well-chosen rug enhances the room’s aesthetic appeal, and the harmonious scheme softens a cold floor, absorbs sound waves, and helps maintain a comfortable temperature.

In fact, rugs are more than simply decorative elements; they are essential to your home’s design.

Trying out a few new rugs isn’t tricky when many significant advantages are available in one easy-to-use package.

The following varieties of rugs can be cleaned by Embassy Cleaners to keep them looking new, no matter which one you choose.

6 Effective rug uses that can liven up your home

1.      Stylish Wall décor ideas

Art is a massive opportunity for self-explanation. It can transfer the real sense and have a profound effect on the atmosphere of a space and on your own mental well-being.

We all love to make a well-designed interior. What could be more groundbreaking than a rug?

2.      Keep your life and work separate

Bedrooms are the cozy home place that can refresh you after hard work, studying, or resting your weary head at night.

Decorating the bedroom with essential equipment like a TV and entertaining tools is common. However, rising trends will make it more fresh and inspirational; the magic rugs come in handy here.

3.      Make your living room extra cozy

A larger rug will keep your feet warm and protect your laminate or varnished floor from the damage caused by friction between the floor and the leg of a chair or coffee table. This is especially important if your family has a habit of throwing themselves onto the sofa.

4. It Is a fantastic entertainment for children

It must be painful to fall on one’s bottom and scrape one’s knees on a hardwood floor if you have a little child crawling about the house. Playtime will be more enjoyable for them if they have a lovely patch of rug to play on, which means fewer screams, tears, and bangs on the door.

For your child’s benefit, choose a rug that is a little more colorful and with entertaining characters. You might be able to have some fun with the characters or aid in their memory growth in this way.

5.      Create separation in an open floor

There is no standard layout for a home because it is determined by the preferences and requirements of the people who live there. This can lead to open floor plans in some houses.

Nothing is wrong with this, but it might lead to complications, such as making it difficult to tell where the living room begins, and the dining room stops.

Because the margins of a rug function like invisible walls, they may be utilized to delineate different regions of the home, just like we did in the previous example with the bedroom and the office. When trying to figure out how to separate your rooms in an open-plan house, additional elements such as sideboards and the backs of furniture can also be helpful.

6.      Protect  your floors from furniture

If you have laminate or solid wood flooring, a rug can be used to keep your dining table from sliding over it and ruining it over time.

In a household where the dining room is frequently used, it’s an issue if you don’t have carpeted floors to deal with. The answer is to lay a beautiful rug that complements your dining room’s decor. Wooden surfaces should be protected by a layer of padding that isn’t too thick.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to refresh the flooring in your home but don’t have a lot of money to spare, you may choose just to add rugs to select areas of the floor. Rugs offer a wide range of benefits.

It’s easy to add color and texture to a room with a rug. Adding a rug to a space gives it stability and definition, as well as a sense of coziness and comfort.
